Caput XIV
Conclavity
âHow could you mistake his identity twice?â The screaming hood of the conclave was in full flight.
âYou told me to kill the Kingâs Investigator. I asked if he was the Kingâs Investigator, he said yes, so I shot him. What more do you want?â Bargis retorted.
âHe had a big nose, you said?â
âMassive. Biggest Iâve ever seen.â
âBrother Hermitage does not have a big nose.â
âBrother Hermitage?â The killer paused at the name, as it rang a bell somewhere in the recesses of his mind. Still, if he was this Kingâs Investigator thing, his name was probably well known. âYou didnât say he was called Brother Hermitage. You said he was called the Kingâs Investigator and this one said he was as well. I wish youâd make your mind up.â
âI have made my mind up. The whole conclave has made its mind up. You keep killing the wrong people.â
âAh, well,â the killer lowered his excitable tone. âThe last one might not be dead, as such.â
âNot dead, as such?â
âShot. Definitely shot, but I was disturbed before I could finish things off. As soon as he saw the crossbow he started running round the room, twittering his head off about how important he was, and how I couldnât shoot him. Soon put him right on that.â
The conclave leader paused for a moment. âBig nose, you say. Thought he was important?â
âVery.â
There was a pause for a momentâs thought. âI think youâve shot Brother Simon.â
The killer shrugged that it really didnât matter to him.
The hood now issued a single, cold hearted laugh. âHa! Thatâll teach him. He thinks heâs doing the business of some secret conclave and then gets shot by the same people. Brother Simon is a man deserving of a crossbow bolt somewhere sensitive if ever there was one. But heâs still not the one we asked for. And heâs not even dead.â
âNot yet. But he can be quite soon. I never like to leave a job half done. Although itâs getting tricky, with this mess.â
âYour mess. Heâll have told people what you look like. Was Brother Hermitage there?â
âHow should I know?â Now the killer felt entitled to be aggrieved. âYou keep sending me out with defective instructions. A quiet, bookish monk in Abbot Abboâs company, then a Kingâs Investigator. Well. I did them both and youâre still not happy.â
âWho disturbed you then?â
âFunnily enough, I didnât wait around to do the introductions. There were three of them though, from a listen I had through the window. Sounded like a monk, another man and a girl.â
âThatâs them.â The conclave leader breathed deeply, as if all his wishes had just been granted. âBrother Hermitage, Wat the Weaver and a girl called Cwen, who claims to be a weaver.â
âThat was Wat the Weaver?â The killer was impressed. âIâm not killing him. I like Wat the Weaver.â
âI bet you do,â the conclave leader sneered. âWell now you know the monk we want, you can go back and do him.â
âOh, no. Iâve had enough of this. It doesnât do to keep going back to the same spot.
